Made Artana - the silversmith

Reportage in Indonesia

Story by Doris Schiffer October 7th, 2015

Made Artana

He was born 36 years ago nearby Padang Bai, Bali, Indonesia. All he wanted was to finish school and get educated, but his parents decided to send him away, with nothing but a oneway ticket to Denpasar (Bali) to get a job - he was only 13 years old. He was lost, sad and alone. A silversmith took care of him although he was too young and too weak, but where there is a will there is a way. He was a very talented trainee and learned every step by heart.

Not a vendor, but an artist

After years in the big cities he decided to return to Padang Bai. He learned English and works now, since 5 years in a small shop at the end of the bay. Come to visit him at work, let him explain all the steps to create wonderful jewellry. If you want, you can order custom made necklaces and many more. He is an artist, not a vendor, don´t be afraid to come by and have a talk.
